The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé is not only the most emotional vehicle in its class, it is also highly intelligent: From MBUX Interior Assist, which recognises operational demands from gestures and equips the interior with intelligence, through augmented reality for navigation and understanding indirect voice commands to the ENERGIZING COACH that provides individual fitness recommendations, the new CLA offers an array of clever solutions. There are also ingenious details when it comes to the aerodynamics and functions for the Intelligent Drive driving assistance package. The design underlines the coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes or the rear licence plate which has been moved down. As such it does justice to its predecessor’s status as a design icon.
“Back then we tapped into a completely new segment with the first CLA, a four-door compact coupé. And the success does us justice: 750,000 units of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake alone have already been sold”, states Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales. “The new edition of the CLA has been developed further in an intelligent way and is even more emotional and sportier than its predecessor. Coupled with new operating systems, it sets new benchmarks for the entire class.”
“As a four-door coupé, the new CLA intrigues with its puristic, seductive design and brings the design DNA of ‘sensual purity’ to a new level. It is compelling for its perfect proportions, which are very close to the initial design sketches: a long, stretched bonnet, a compact greenhouse, a wide track with flared wheel arches and our typical GT rear end with a pronounced ‘Coke-bottle shoulder’,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG. “In short, the CLA Coupé has the potential to become a modern design icon.”
The new generation of compacts has made a key contribution to the rejuvenation and image change of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The CLA is important for winning and retaining new customers in particular. In 2017, every other customer in Europe had previously driven a vehicle from another brand. Over 75 percent of European customers who previously drove a CLA as a coupé or Shooting Brake chose a Mercedes‑Benz again for their next vehicle. In total, some 750,000 units of the first-generation CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake contributed considerably Mercedes-Benz’s success.
The design underlines the coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes or the rear licence plate which has been moved down. With the greenhouse moved back, the sporty GT rear achieves a balance between elegance and sportiness.
All variants of the new CLA Coupé offer very good aerodynamic drag (cd value from 0.23). Despite the wider track, the frontal area remained the same size as on the predecessor model (2.21 m2).
More spacious and practical:
The new CLA has tangibly more space at many spots in the interior. At the front, for example, headroom has increased by 17 mm and elbow room by 35 mm. Thanks to a wider opening (+262 mm), the boot compartment is now more convenient to load than the predecessor model.
Cooler style in the interior:
A generous feeling of space thanks to the widescreen display and the special wrap around architecture of the dashboard are combined with high-quality materials.
The CLA possesses the latest version of the MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience – voice control. The ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant can recognise and answer even complex queries on an increasing number of topics.
A new control experience:
The MBUX interior assistant recognises operating requests from movements. This makes various comfort and MBUX functions even simpler and more intuitive. On request MBUX also comes with augmented reality. A video image of the surroundings taken with the front camera is augmented with helpful navigation information.
For the first time, the CLA is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations. Functional scopes from the S-Class are available in the Driving Assistance Package.
MULTIBEAM LED headlamps:
The optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps allow quick and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the current road and traffic conditions. With the adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, the high beam can remain on at all times, because approaching traffic or traffic up ahead is masked out by partially deactivating individual high-beam modules.
Two-litre diesel engines with Euro 6d
As previously in the A-Class and B-Class, the two-litre diesel engine (OM 654q) in the CLA 200 d/CLA 220 d (combined fuel consumption 4.4-4.2 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 117-110 g/km) fulfils the Euro 6d standard, which is only obligatory for new models from 1.1.2020.
