Rüsselsheim. When Opel and 1. FSV Mainz 05 invite the public to the OPEL CUP, it means football at its finest. Just like last year, the participating European teams once again thrilled spectators with exciting duels. The winner of today’s battle is Sevilla FC. Second place went to Mainz 05 and third place to Everton FC.
“We are happy for Sevilla FC and congratulate them on their victory in the second OPEL CUP. What the spectators were able to experience on the pitch today was the art of football – exciting, emotional and up-close and personal for the fans. That really fires up excitement about the new season. We are more than happy to stand for such a spectacular football event with our name,“ said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller in the Mainz OPEL ARENA.
The participating teams already had to demonstrate their skills at the premiere of the OPEL CUP last year. So the approximately 8000 spectators were again able to look forward to sizzling action in the stadium the second time the tournament was held. The event was again played in a round robin format with each game lasting for two times 30 minutes. So the scores of fans enjoyed a total of 180 minutes of first-class football. The stadium party hosted by 1. FSV Mainz 05 guaranteed plenty of action beyond the pitch. Adults, children and families enjoyed lots of fun and games around the OPEL ARENA; and those who wanted to were able to take a closer look at the latest models from Rüsselsheim.
The Arena in Mainz has been named after Opel for three years and the Rüsselsheim-based brand has been an exclusive partner of 1. FSV Mainz 05 since 2012. The OPEL CUP 2019 is the second time the brand has held the international tournament, with the Opel Blitz shining on the LED boards around the stadium and all other communication platforms.
Elsewhere, Opel is a strategic partner of Borussia Dortmund and since the 2017/18 season also present with the Opel Blitz on the shirt sleeve of BVB. A particularly close relationship exists with the coach of Liverpool FC and former Mainz and Dortmund coach: Champions League winner Jürgen Klopp has been Opel brand ambassador and a passionate Opel Insignia driver since 2012. In addition, the Rüsselsheim brand promotes grassroots sport with the BVB FAMILY CUP, in which children and adults form mixed teams.
The two Opel teams will start the new Bundesliga season on Saturday, August 17. The BVB will go up against Augsburg at home and Mainz 05 wants to celebrate a picture-perfect season start at the away game against Freiburg.
