New solar panel system will save 32.8 tonnes of CO2 per annum
As the world’s only manufacturer of totally original-specification replacement bodyshells and individual panels for classic Minis, MGs, Triumphs and Morrises, the products of British Motor Heritage (BMH) are proudly rooted in the past. However, the company’s approach to business is anything but, and its latest investment in industry-leading technology is a 162kW solar panel system that’s set to reduce the firm’s carbon footprint by 32.8 tonnes of CO2 a year, or 821 tonnes over 25 years – an amount that equates to driving a typical passenger car in excess of 2 million miles!
The saving in electricity bills will also be colossal, as its costs for the next 25 years are now pegged at 3.48p per kWh, compared to a typical current commercial energy price of 25.00p per kWh – a figure that is expected to rise far higher still over the coming months.
These impressive results were achieved by affixing a system of 432 solar panels to the roof of BMH’s plant in Witney, Oxfordshire. A task that was completed in just seven days by Centreco Ltd of Heath Charnock, Lancashire. Commenting on the installation BMH’s Managing Director Graham Payne said: “With energy prices escalating at an alarming rate, our switch to solar power has proved very timely, and it feels good to know that in one fell swoop we’ve both slashed our manufacturing costs and significantly reduced our carbon footprint. It’s a win-win situation.”
The company’s next modernising project is replacing the factory’s traditional lighting system with an LED one, which will not only dramatically improve the level of illumination within the building but serve as another valuable cost saving. Interestingly, though rooted in the past, BMH’s core products are now increasingly on trend, with brand new bodyshells being supplied to RBW for its electrically-powered MGB and the likelihood of the company’s classic Mini shells being purchased for electrification growing by the day.
